4 Tips for Avoiding Wedding Registration Frustration

Registering for wedding gifts can be one of the most fun, yet incredibly daunting activities you will encounter when planning a wedding. You will likely be faced with an array of places to register (just about every store and retailer now offers a registry service!), not to mention choosing which individual items will end up on your registry. Factor those decisions in with the uncertainly of which items will actually be purchased off your registry and it is easy to see the stress mounting!

Well, fret no more! As a wedding registry survivor, here are a few tips that I picked up along the way!

1.       Get Practical!  It is easy to focus on the obvious: the state-of-the-art kitchen appliances that will help transform you into a modern day Betty Crocker, the fancy china that will sparkle in the dining room and the monogram linens that will adorn your towel rack. While all of those things are great, you may only find yourself using them on the rare occasion. Think about the things you use (or would use) on a daily basis that might be a bit less sexy or glamorous, like electronic toothbrushes, single-serve coffeemakers and fluffy down comforters.

2.       Think Beyond the Bed & Bath! Let’s face it; this isn’t your mother’s wedding registry! Today, most couples have had the experience of living on their own and have the stuff to prove it! (In our case, lots of stuff!) More often than not, couples are faced with the task of consolidating two households into one, especially if you already live together! I encourage future newlyweds to get creative. Planning to purchase a home or embark on a remodeling project? Let your guests know how much you would appreciate gift cards to home improvement stores and furniture galleries! While guests may not be able to purchase an individual item, they will have the joy in knowing that they are contributing to something that will likely be with you for many years to come!

3.       Cash is King! It goes without saying, but giving the gift of green is always in style. It is perfectly acceptable to let your guests know about the major purchase you and your honey are saving up to make. Whether you are saving up for a home, need extra cash for the honeymoon of your dreams or if you are paying for your wedding yourself – these are all causes that your friends and family are likely to gladly be a part of!

4.       Spread the love! Consider requesting that your guests donate to a charity or organization of your choice in lieu of traditional wedding gifts.  While these gifts are slightly less tangible, the effects of your will be amplified exponentially and will contribute to the greater good. That is certainly something anyone can feel good about!

At the end of the day, where you register and the wedding gifts you receive are just the icing on the cake. You may only receive four of the six place settings you had hoped for, but don’t sweat the small stuff! (Most stores have completion programs and rewards so you will be able to make these adjustments easily.) However, the greatest gift you will receive is marrying the person of your dreams and spending a lifetime of happiness together. It doesn’t get any better than that!
