5 (More) Tips for Having a Fun Reception Your Guests Will Remember

Earlier this year, I published a post called 5 Tips for Having a Fun Reception Your Guests Will Remember, and I was astonished by the response — it’s been one of the most popular posts here for a while, with tens of thousands of views! So I figured, why not provide some more tips? After all, who doesn’t want a fun reception?!

Picking up right where we left off last time…

6. Put Thought into the Seating

If you’re assigning seats, be sure to be some serious thought into who’s sitting with who, especially in cases where some table guests might not know each other. It seems obvious, but be sure to think of who will get along with who, which people will have great conversation, who will stay late and who will party hardest. Be thoughtful in your decisions so there aren’t any awkward table situations. Putting your reserved great aunt with your best party-buddy from college might not be your best bet.

7. Break the Ice

As Ashley wrote in her post on Wedding Table Games, “We’ve all been there, you just sat through a beautiful wedding ceremony, and now you find yourself at a table full of strangers at the reception, anxiously awaiting the arrival of the bride and groom since they disappeared with their photographer for what is now starting to seem like forever! Luckily, wedding activities for guests seem to be a new and growing trend that can help pass the time during transitional moments in your wedding schedule, break the ice and get your guests talking to each other!”

8. Keep the Toasts Short and Sweet

Toasts can often set the tone for an entire wedding reception. If they’re short, sweet, sentimental and funny, they’ll set the stage for a night that’s equally as great. Alternatively, if they’re long and dull, they could easily put a lull on the evening. Prior to the wedding, prep your toasters with this key piece of information and direct them to keep toasts under 2 minutes. Your guests will surely thank you!

9. Photograph the Fun

One thing I wish I had included as my wedding was a photo booth! Why? Because they’re oh so fun! As Danielle Nelson of Capture POD photo booth rentals explains, “The entertainment factor is undeniable—even when the bar is empty, the photo booth is always full with guests striking silly poses with playful props. This is especially amusing at themed weddings when brides incorporate props that fit with their theme. The awkwardness of posing for a hired photographer is eliminated so guests are candid and, well, hilarious.”

10. Don’t End the Party Too Early

If you’re planning on a fun reception, be sure you book your venue for long enough for the party to last. There’s nothing worse than having the lights come up when everyone is still tearing up the dance floor! And if you can’t stay at your reception venue, be sure to have a back-up plan for your late-night guests. In our case, we knew we had to be out of our reception venue by 10pm, so we planned an official wedding after party at one of our favorite nightspots. We reserved a private VIP area large enough to hold as many guests as we knew would want to keep the party going, and we danced into the night!

What other tips do you have for ensuring a fun wedding reception?
