{Home} Transforming a Messy, Boring Spare Room into a Fun & Bright Office/Craft Studio

by Nicole on March 12, 2012

I’m really, really excited to share with you all a project I’ve been working on since the start of the year — the remodel of our spare bedroom into my lovely new craft studio/home office. The good stuff is at the end, but I hope you don’t mind a little bit of the background first…

The house that Michael and I live in isn’t huge…it’s a starter home that we purchased about 3 years ago, so it’s only 1,000 square feet of livable space — 2 bedrooms, 1 bath. While that seemed like a lot when we upgraded from a 600 square foot apartment, now we’ve learned that we have to get creative when it comes to finding a place for everything.

Our spare bedroom started out as exactly that — a room, with a full bedroom set, for guests to stay in. Then, when we realized we didn’t get enough guests to justify using about 1/5 of our living spare that way, we turned it into an office with a futon. Then, somewhere down the line, it became a catch-all room for the stuff we didn’t have a place for and didn’t want to put in the basement. This is what it looked like:

It was messy, boring and dull, and if my Cricut and printer weren’t in there, I almost never would have gone in.

So at the start of the year, I decided it was time for a makeover. I was doing more and more crafts and getting tired of blogging from the couch all the time. Plus, my craft supplies were all sitting in boxes, which hurt my motivation to do the DIY projects I love so much. I needed a space to craft and blog and also a place to store everything in a way that it was all still accessible. I also needed to create a room I would enjoy spending a lot of time in.

THIS is the room I (with some definite help from the hubby) created:

Pretty much everything in the room is DIY, from the workspace to the decor. Plus, it’s in my favorite color scheme — red and aqua! What do you think?
