I recently came across GridIron Belles – A Guide to Saturdays in Dixie, and it instantaneously spoke to my heart. You see, this Midwest gal married a Southern boy (well, South Florida to be exact, but he is country to the core).
College football is a religion in our house, and Game Day is more than just that – it’s an entire day, night, weekend, season, etc. My husband is a football fanatic with personal or familial ties to Florida State, Alabama, Florida and Clemson, whew!
So, back to the GridIron Belles. The franchise was started by Christie Leigh Mueller, a self-professed Southern Belle who has set out to explain football to women, from a fellow female’s perspective – genius! She has developed an online presence and has a book that will help us understand the key dynamics of football, tailgate inspiration and game day fashion!
For many brides, incorporating collegiate affiliations is an important element that must be integrated into their wedding festivities. So I (virtually) sat down with Christie as she shared some of her football finesse for brides-to-be.
Football-Themed Favors: If you and your hubby want to pay homage to your alma mater, collegiate koozies and customized cups are great ways to incorporate your names, the date of your wedding and your school colors/mascot all in one great piece that guests can take home with them and remember the awesome time they had at your wedding! Swoozies and Paper House Online both offer great, customizable options.
Strike-Up the Band: Combining your love of your betrothed and your love of your team is such a fun way to celebrate your wedding day. Have the band (or your DJ!) play your school song as you exit the ceremony. You can also add a little flair by being sent-away with confetti or pom-poms in your school’s colors.
Crowd-Pleasers: Many weddings feature sports-themed groom cakes, an easy way to have both a classic wedding cake and a cake with a bit of personality! If you’re really looking to make a statement, set up a tailgate-inspired area of your reception with traditional pre-game food in football-shaped edibles! Your guests will really get a kick out of this, and it is sure to be a hit with the male guests in attendance! Check out some tasty pigskin party delights over at Taste of Home!

While pride for your team can serve as a unifier, there is the inevitable situation of a “house-divided”. If you and your hubby attended rival colleges or have different favorite teams, you might find yourself in a sticky situation. Christie’s best advice? Getting married should be about joining two people and their families together, not causing a divide! Incorporate both teams. Besides, that is an easy sacrifice in sharing. Just think about the challenge you will face when you have to share a closet, bathroom, etc.!
