{Pinteresting} Why You Don’t Have To Be Engaged to Have “Dream Wedding” Boards

by Kelsey on February 3, 2012

I think it’s safe to say that anyone who’s anyone has joined the Pinterest community by now—and that the social sharing tool is becoming the marketer’s new dream platform. It reminds me of my days as a freshman in college when Facebook first went mainstream…I was one of the last among my friends to join, but now (and as most others would probably admit too) I can’t imagine my life without it. As I am constantly turning to my Pinterest boards for a recipe to make for dinner, a inspiring quote to hang on my fridge, or a new color scheme to redecorate my bedroom, I realize that it would be strange to not have Pinterest, not to mention much less convenient, even though I’ve only had an account for a few months!

As all of you future brides know, Pinterest is also revolutionizing the way we plan weddings. While it is still fun to mark pages of your dream dress, ideal flowers, and perfect palettes while thumbing through the latest copies of Brides or Martha Stewart Weddings, the sheer volume of wedding-related pins offers more ideas than could ever be contained in a single issue of a magazine. Wedding inspiration boards: every girl has them, whether they’re engaged, soon-to-be engaged, single, or even already married!

So what gives? Amy Hanenberg,  27, says she’s guilty as charged. “My wedding is planned via Pinterest,” she explains. “The only thing missing is the ring on my finger.” As a designer and trend forecaster, Amy has helped countless women plan their own dream weddings, so she is pinning away at her “I do” board with no regrets. “I believe the universe gives you what you’re not afraid to ask for,” Amy says (or in this case, Pinterest does!).

And Sylvia Bolivar, a single girl in her mid-20s who works in marketing, also admits to having wedding idea boards of her own. “I’ve been a bridesmaid in at least four weddings, and am often asked for input on ideas,” Sylvia says. “Do you remember the scene in Bride Wars where Kate Hudson takes out a binder full of her collages of wedding clippings? Pinterest serves as a modern-day version of the same thing.” This girl is armed and ready: check out her “Happily ever after” board here.

Let’s surmise a few reasons for the ubiquitous wedding boards:

  1. Ideas for your best friend’s wedding…it’s about being a good pal (or the guise of it).
  2. It’s fun, it’s fantasy, and it fits along with the theme of all the other “dream” boards (dream home, dream wardrobe, dream wedding…) that let’s face it, are most likely reaching a bit high.
  3. You want to be prepared when the time comes.
  4. There are only so many cookie dough/cake batter/chocolate-peanut-butter-Oreo recipes you can pin before you have to focus on something besides food or you’re going to eat your hand at work.

But does it freak guys out? My boyfriend’s response: “What’s Pinterest?”

Enough said. Girls, pin on, because your secret is safe with us—at least for now! (And oh yes, I’m guilty too.)
