Results of a Unplanned Honeymoon

If you’ve been following the Plunge Project for a little while, you might already know that Michael and I did not plan our honeymoon. Instead, we decided to be spontaneous, put our money in the bank after the wedding, and then book whatever deal we could find at the last second.

If you know me, you know I’m as planned as they come. And like many couples, Michael and I are complete opposites…especially when it comes to that. So, since the wedding was going to be my way, I agreed to do the honeymoon Michael’s way — completely spontaneously. And I must admit, it was a refreshing change!

With the wedding such a big undertaking, it was actually really nice to not worry about the honeymoon until after it was over. Plus, this gave us additional time with our family and friends after the wedding, and of course a much needed full day of rest. It was nice to not feel rushed for the first time in a little while.

So where did we go? Fort Lauderdale…which was an absolute blast! We stayed at the very awesome Doubletree Gallery ONE on the Intracoastal (which I would recommend to anyone visiting Ft. Lauderdale) and lounged around on the beach and by the pool, sipping rum runners and margaritas the whole way through. It was relaxing and PERFECT!

But for those of you thinking of doing the same thing Michael and I did, I must let you in on one lesson learned: while hotels are super cheap at the last minute, it’s rare to find a flight that is. We found all-inclusives in Jamaica for $350/person/week BUT flights ran around $1,000 per person that last minute. That’s ultimately why we chose Ft. Lauderdale. It was one of the only flights we could actually afford. Either way, I wouldn’t change a thing!

However, in the future, I think the best way to get the very best deal would be to choose a location and book your flight in advance. Then, at the last second, figure out what hotel you’re staying at. It’s a gamble, but it would also be the way to get the best possible deal.

What do you think? Have you ever booked a last second vacation? How did it turn out?

We do road trips each year and usually do not book hotels. We drive and stop here and there to see interesting things along the way. Saw a hidden waterfall in North Carolina, played dominoes under a tree with some old guys in Houston, etc.

We have had pretty good luck during this except when we arrived in Washington DC at the same time that colleges and high schools were there. Finally, we found a wonderful historical hotel named “The River Inn at Foggy Bottoms” which is featured in Pres. Truman’s daughter’s novel “Murder at the Kennedy Center by Margaret Truman”.

This is one of my favorite novels so we thought it was fate that the only hotel that had rooms left in D.C. was featured in my favorite novel…
