Rock/Trash the Dress: A Do or a Don’t?

by Cheryl on January 5, 2012

Having a “Rock the Dress” photo shoot (also commonly known as “Trash the Dress”) is becoming an increasingly popular trend among brides. While some gals would cringe at the thought of damaging their wedding gown, others see this as an opportunity to let their hair down and have some fun without having to worry about damaging their dress on their wedding day. I can personally attest to the fact that I walked on eggshells while I wore my wedding dress, afraid that one false move could create a wedding day disaster.

Here are some things to consider before you decide if rocking your dress is right for you…

Rock That Dress:

  • Let’s face it- the odds aren’t in your favor that someone at the wedding reception won’t accidentally step on the train of your dress, spill a drink on your dress or that even you yourself won’t end up with creating food stains, etc.
  • You only live once! Live a little and let loose. The photos you end up with will showcase your relationship with your hubby in a completely different light, one that is much more relaxed and without the added pressures that your wedding day can bring about.
  • You can always get your dress dry-cleaned. Most stains can be removed by an experience, professional drycleaner. Chat with yours first, and see what they say.
  • What else are you going to do with it?

A Squeaky Clean Dress is Best:

  • Your wedding gown is sentimental to you, and you could never imagine the chance of it getting damaged.
  • You tried on hundreds of wedding dresses and spent countless enduring alteration appointments, ultimately purchasing what will likely be the most expensive dress you will ever buy in your lifetime- you wouldn’t even give it a second thought.
  • You wore a legacy dress that was your mother’s, grandmother’s, etc., and don’t have much choice in the matter.
  • You want to pass the dress down in to your daughter for her wedding or have it altered into her baptismal gown.
  • Strapped for cash? You may want to sell your dress, in which case you will want to keep it in the best condition possible.
  • Feeling generous? There are several charities such as Brides Against Breast Cancer that accept dress donations all in support of the greater good, however they must be in good enough condition for a second trip down the aisle.

Afraid to trash your dress but still want an opportunity to capture some amazing moments of you and your new hubby, aglow with the joy of being newlyweds? No worries! Simply buy a second, less expensive dress that you can rock out in!

Tell us! Do you plan to rock your dress? If so, how?
